SUMMARY:Gentrification\, touristification and social (un)sustainability: a comparative European cities analysis
DESCRIPTION:12 may\, 11h-13h CET \nOnline \nContent \nThis activity focuses on the processes of gentrification and touristification in the inner city and their implications for social (un)sustainability\, with particular emphasis on housing rights and urban justice. Using the historic neighbourhood of Mouraria\, Lisbon\, as a case study\, the activity aims to promote critical understanding of contemporary urban transformations and their social impacts. It is organised in two complementary parts that combine theoretical reflection with participatory learning. \nThe first part consists of a one-hour thematic presentation and discussion addressing key concepts such as gentrification\, touristification\, social sustainability\, and the right to the city\, contextualised within the recent urban and housing dynamics of central areas of different European cities. Special attention is given to the role of tourism\, short-term rentals\, and urban regeneration policies in reshaping neighbourhoods and intensifying displacement pressures on long-term and vulnerable residents. \nThe second part involves a role-play exercise based on a realistic eviction scenario in Mouraria\, in which participants represent different social actors\, including municipal housing officials\, housing rights associations\, tenants\, and property owners. Through structured interaction and negotiation\, participants develop critical thinking\, argumentation\, empathy\, and civic competences. The role-play highlights the pedagogical value of experiential learning in understanding complex urban conflicts and exploring the possibilities and limitations of policy responses and collective action. \nLearning Objectives \nBy the end of this two-hour session\, participants will: \n\nDevelop a critical understanding of the processes of gentrification and touristification and their implications for social (un)sustainability in inner-city contexts\, as U!REKA cities contexts.\nExamine the relationship between urban transformation\, housing rights\, and urban justice\, with particular attention to vulnerable populations.\nAnalyse the role of tourism\, short-term rentals\, and urban regeneration policies in shaping contemporary European cities.\nEngage with the concept of the “right to the city” as a framework for interpreting urban change and social inequalities.\nApply theoretical knowledge to a real-world case study (Mouraria\, Lisbon) through participatory and experiential learning methods.\n\nLearning Outcomes \nUpon successful completion of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine and critically discuss key concepts such as gentrification\, touristification\, social sustainability\, and the right to the city.\nIdentify and evaluate the social impacts of urban transformation processes\, particularly in relation to displacement and housing precarity.\nCompare urban dynamics across different European contexts\, recognising common patterns and specificities.\nApply negotiation\, argumentation\, and critical thinking skills in a simulated policy and eviction scenario.\nReflect on the ethical\, social\, and political dimensions of housing and urban policy decisions.\n\nTeacher: Luis Mendez \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Call for papers: DGWF Annual Conference 2026 | Future Lab Continuing Education: New Scenarios for Lifelong Learning
DESCRIPTION:Under the title “Future Lab Continuing Education” the DGWF Annual Conference 2026 invites participants to develop\, discuss\, and reflect on new scenarios for continuing education. The focus is on the systematic development\, discussion\, and classification of future endeavours that could be significant in the context of continuing education—in terms of content and target groups\, as well as formats\, governance\, framework conditions\, and social impact. \nThe aim is to identify different possible visions of the future and explore their implications for education policy\, academic institutions\, and professional practice\, as well as synergies with undergraduate teaching. What possible\, probable\, and desirable futures will shape the continuing education of tomorrow—and how can we shape them actively today? How could continuing education position itself in different visions of the future? What skills\, structures\, and formats would be conceivable? And how can universities and continuing education institutions make and pave the way for bold and strategically necessary decisions? \nA particular focus will be placed on international university partners – for example\, from European university alliances and other global collaborations\, to open a broader international perspective. What future developments are conceivable in this context? How can we jointly shape an international educational space characterized by openness\, mobility\, digital connectivity\, and shared responsibility for education and research? What role can continuing education play here\, drawing on its strengths in openness\, flexible formats\, diversity\, and didactic innovation? \nMore information: https://dgwf.net/dgwf-annual-conference-2026

Its aim is to develop energy-resilient urban districts by combininig data\, design\, and collaboration. \nThe 4A4PEDs Knowledge Exchange Online Event brings together decision-makers\, practitioners\, researchers\, and industry representatives from local\, regional and transnational levels across Europe. They are invited to exchange  experiences\, identify barriers\, and chart collaborative paths towards the wider implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). To overcome identified barriers or challenges\, the transnational knowledge exchange event aims to identify best practices as well as provide leverage for strategies for cities to access support and funding for local PEDs. \nKey notes from Finland\nFour professionals from Finland provide insights: \n\nJoni Mäkinen – City of Espoo\, analysis of Challenges and Opportunities\nMia Ala-Juusela – First results from RESPED project\nTapio Toivanen – Path to sustainability in built environments\nPetri Koivula – Case Higher Education and PEDs\n\nAfter keynotes we have Q&A and group discussion\, addressing the current PED uncertainties from Availability\, Accessibility\, Affordability and Alliance perspectives. We hear a short summary and collect the key findings. \nMore information: https://4a4peds.eu/2025/11/27/event/ \nRegistration: Sign up on Google Forms

SUMMARY:U!REKA shared value creation
DESCRIPTION:Do you feel a responsibility to make students aware of sustainability and the transition to a new economic way of thinking? Do you want to guide students to become change agents in the transition to a sustainable future? The shared value creation workshop offers a powerful tool (3LC-model) to make sustainability concrete and applicable in your education. \n\nThe Triple Layered Business Model Canvas (3LC-model) \nThis 3LC model expands the well-known Business Model Canvas with two additional layers: an ecological and a social layer. The 3LC model\, based on the work of Joyce\, Paquin and Pigneur\, offers teachers the opportunity to map not only the economic\, but also the ecological and social aspects of companies. The ecological and social layers together form the sustainability layers of the model. This way\, your students will learn how companies can contribute to a more sustainable future. \n  \nWhat to expect?\n \n\nInspiration and concrete tools to integrate sustainability into your lessons.\nInsight into the use of the 3LC model\, with which you can let students work on issues surrounding the new economy\, regenerative business models and the economy of meaning.\nIntroduction to the ‘personal layer’ to develop into a ‘change agent’.\nApplication possibilities for teachers from all disciplines: the workshop is ideal for individual teachers\, departments or complete teams of teachers.\n\nDo you feel responsible for making students aware of sustainability and the transition to new economic thinking? Then this workshop is a must for you! \nRegister here (by 8 December 2025).
