SUMMARY:U!REKA Innovative Governance and Citizen Engagement CoE online workshop
DESCRIPTION:Warm welcome to the online workshop\, organised by U!REKA’s Innovative Governance and Citizen Engagement Centre of Expertise\, on Wednesday\, October 21st\, from 14:00 – 16:00 (CEST). \nWhat is this workshop about?\nThis online workshop focuses on Digital Humanism for Health and Well-being\, bringing together colleagues interested in strengthening collaboration and developing concrete joint initiatives in this area. The workshop aims to provide an inspiring space for exchanging ideas\, identifying synergies\, and building project and paper ideas. \nThe workshop will begin with a keynote presentation and be followed by an interactive discussion. \nResearchers interested in taking part should use their institutional email address to join the Teams event link. For further questions\, please contact the Innovation Director Anita Ahlstrand from Metropolia UAS: anita.ahlstrand@metropolia.fi. \nKeynote\nThe focus is on Digital Humanism for Health and Wellbeing\, with a keynote presentation by Dr. Mag. Alexander Schmölz from University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna: \n\nAs digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapidly permeate health sectors\, workplaces\, and daily routines\, society faces a profound paradox: while automated systems offer new computational efficiencies\, they simultaneously introduce severe risks of digital burnout\, algorithmic surveillance\, and social alienation. In sensitive domains such as mental health\, the increasing deployment of generative AI chatbots for therapeutic support and interpersonal guidance illustrates a dangerous conflation of technical reliance with genuine human trust.\nBecause AI systems lack consciousness\, bodily vulnerability\, and moral agency\, attempting to delegate relational care to synthetic proxies threatens to erode essential human relations in the health sector\, obscure accountability\, and isolate vulnerable individuals.\nThis keynote positions Digital Humanism and existing studies on health and digital media as an ethical framework to navigate these disruptions and steer technological adoption toward health shared human wellbeing. At its core\, Digital Humanism redefines the conditio humana by ascribing calculative\, rule-based rationality to machines\, thereby liberating humans for uniquely human capacities—such as empathy\, co-creativity\, ethical judgment\, and authentic care.\n\nLink for MS Teams

SUMMARY:U!READ: Bring a book!
DESCRIPTION:U!READ book club launches on 29 October with a session dedicated to U!REKA’s values. \nThe first session of U!READ\, the brand new U!REKA book club\, will take place online on Thursday\, 29 October 2026\, 18h (CET). \nFor this meeting\, participants are invited to bring a book they associate with one of the three U!REKA values: inclusion\, co-creation and boldness. The choice is entirely open: it can be a book about that value\, a book that has shaped an experience related to it\, or one that\, in some way\, invites reflection on its meaning. \nDuring the session\, each participant will have the opportunity to introduce their chosen book and share how they connect it to the idea that inspired their choice. U!READ aims to create a space for cultural exchange\, expanding perspectives and reflecting on and appreciating the unique ways in which each person connects with books and makes sense of the world. \nJoin us to discover new books and perspectives while connecting with fellow readers from across Europe. \nU!READ is a collaborative initiative that offers monthly online shared-reading sessions for the U!REKA community. The sessions last one hour and take place monthly\, on the last Thursday of each month. SUMMARY:Designing Environments for Movement and Well-being
DESCRIPTION:This staff training explores how the environments in which we work\, learn\, and interact can shape movement behaviours and contribute to well-being. Drawing on a constraints-led perspective\, the session challenges approaches that place responsibility for being active primarily on individual motivation and considers how changes to tasks and environments can create opportunities for movement in everyday academic and professional settings.  \nThe activity is organised in two complementary parts\, combining theoretical foundations with practical and participatory learning.  \n\nThe first part consists of a one-hour thematic presentation and discussion introducing the constraints-led approach and the interaction between individual\, task\, and environmental constraints in shaping behaviour. Participants will also be introduced to the concept of affordances (opportunities for action offered by the environment) and will consider how physical\, organisational\, and social environments can facilitate or restrict movement. These concepts will be connected to everyday situations such as prolonged sitting\, meetings\, teaching and learning activities\, breaks\, work routines\, and movement within university environments.\nThe second part consists of an interactive workshop in which participants analyse common work and learning situations through a constraints-based framework. Working with realistic scenarios\, participants identify individual\, task\, and environmental constraints that may limit movement and explore how these conditions can be redesigned to create more opportunities for action. Rather than prescribing specific behaviours\, the activity encourages participants to consider how relatively small changes to spaces\, tasks\, routines\, and organisational practices can support more active everyday environments. \n\nThrough discussion\, collaborative problem-solving\, and practical application\, the session provides participants with a framework for understanding movement as an outcome of the interaction between the individual and the environment\, and for considering how this perspective can contribute to the design of environments that support movement and well-being.  \nLearning Objectives  \nBy the end of this two-hour session\, participants will:  \n\nDevelop an understanding of how individual\, task\, and environmental constraints interact to shape movement behaviour. \nExplore the concept of affordances and its relevance to opportunities for movement in everyday work and learning environments. \nExamine how physical\, organisational\, and social environments can facilitate or restrict movement. \nApply a constraints-led perspective to common situations within academic and professional contexts. \nExplore practical ways of redesigning environments\, tasks\, and routines to create more opportunities for movement and support well-being. \n\nLearning Outcomes  \nUpon successful completion of the session\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe the basic principles of a constraints-led approach and distinguish between individual\, task\, and environmental constraints. \nIdentify constraints and affordances that influence movement in everyday work and learning contexts. \nAnalyse how characteristics of environments\, tasks\, and organisational routines can influence opportunities for movement. \nPropose practical modifications to everyday situations that create more opportunities for movement. \nApply a constraints-based framework to reflect critically on the design of their own work and learning environments.

SUMMARY:AI\, Cultural Diversity and Sustainability Walk into a Bar: What happens when a more diverse world meets increasingly uniform ways of knowing?
DESCRIPTION:AI\, Cultural Diversity and Sustainability Walk into a Bar: What happens when a more diverse world meets increasingly uniform ways of knowing? \nProfessor: Cristina Cruz (cristinac@eselx.ipl.pt) \nDate: 9 December\, 11h-13h CET \nOnline \nFor lecturers\, researchers\, and administrative professional \nContent\nCan a society become increasingly culturally diverse while also becoming increasingly uniform in the ways it produces\, accesses and circulates knowledge? And what would that mean for social sustainability? \nThis session explores the tension between cultural diversity and the increasing concentration of the systems through which knowledge is produced\, accessed and circulated. Drawing on the idea that cultural diversity can function as a reservoir of alternative ways of understanding and solving unforeseen problems\, it asks what happens when increasingly diverse societies rely on increasingly concentrated systems of knowledge — particularly artificial intelligence. \nThe session explores several dimensions in which AI may contribute to increasingly uniform ways of knowing\, including language\, knowledge\, concepts\, representation\, and the range of solutions or futures that become easier to imagine. \nAt the same time\, AI may also create new possibilities: lowering barriers to information\, supporting translation and education\, and potentially making minority languages and knowledge systems more visible and accessible. \nThe session invites participants to explore where AI may contribute to increasingly uniform ways of knowing\, under what conditions this may happen\, and if AI might instead support cultural diversity. The discussion ultimately asks what increasingly uniform ways of knowing might mean for social sustainability in increasingly diverse societies. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDevelop a critical understanding of the relationship between cultural diversity\, ways of knowing and social sustainability.\nExplore how increasingly uniform ways of knowing may emerge in increasingly diverse societies.\nExamine the risks and possibilities of artificial intelligence for cultural diversity and the ways knowledge is produced\, accessed and circulated.\nConnect conceptual perspectives with concrete examples from education and society.\nReflect on the conditions under which AI may support cultural diversity rather than contribute to increasingly uniform ways of knowing.\n\n Outcomes\n\nDiscuss the relationship between cultural diversity\, ways of knowing and social sustainability.\nIdentify ways in which increasingly uniform ways of knowing may emerge in culturally diverse societies.\nAnalyse how AI may both contribute to increasingly uniform ways of knowing and support access to diverse languages\, knowledge and perspectives.\nApply the concepts discussed to concrete examples from education and society.\nReflect on the conditions under which AI may support cultural diversity rather than contribute to increasingly uniform ways of knowing.
