SUMMARY:Designing Environments for Movement and Well-being
DESCRIPTION:This staff training explores how the environments in which we work\, learn\, and interact can shape movement behaviours and contribute to well-being. Drawing on a constraints-led perspective\, the session challenges approaches that place responsibility for being active primarily on individual motivation and considers how changes to tasks and environments can create opportunities for movement in everyday academic and professional settings.  \nThe activity is organised in two complementary parts\, combining theoretical foundations with practical and participatory learning.  \n\nThe first part consists of a one-hour thematic presentation and discussion introducing the constraints-led approach and the interaction between individual\, task\, and environmental constraints in shaping behaviour. Participants will also be introduced to the concept of affordances (opportunities for action offered by the environment) and will consider how physical\, organisational\, and social environments can facilitate or restrict movement. These concepts will be connected to everyday situations such as prolonged sitting\, meetings\, teaching and learning activities\, breaks\, work routines\, and movement within university environments. \nThe second part consists of an interactive workshop in which participants analyse common work and learning situations through a constraints-based framework. Working with realistic scenarios\, participants identify individual\, task\, and environmental constraints that may limit movement and explore how these conditions can be redesigned to create more opportunities for action. Rather than prescribing specific behaviours\, the activity encourages participants to consider how relatively small changes to spaces\, tasks\, routines\, and organisational practices can support more active everyday environments. \n\nThrough discussion\, collaborative problem-solving\, and practical application\, the session provides participants with a framework for understanding movement as an outcome of the interaction between the individual and the environment\, and for considering how this perspective can contribute to the design of environments that support movement and well-being.  \nLearning Objectives  \nBy the end of this two-hour session\, participants will:  \n\nDevelop an understanding of how individual\, task\, and environmental constraints interact to shape movement behaviour. \nExplore the concept of affordances and its relevance to opportunities for movement in everyday work and learning environments. \nExamine how physical\, organisational\, and social environments can facilitate or restrict movement. \nApply a constraints-led perspective to common situations within academic and professional contexts. \nExplore practical ways of redesigning environments\, tasks\, and routines to create more opportunities for movement and support well-being. \n\nLearning Outcomes  \nUpon successful completion of the session\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe the basic principles of a constraints-led approach and distinguish between individual\, task\, and environmental constraints. \nIdentify constraints and affordances that influence movement in everyday work and learning contexts. \nAnalyse how characteristics of environments\, tasks\, and organisational routines can influence opportunities for movement. \nPropose practical modifications to everyday situations that create more opportunities for movement. \nApply a constraints-based framework to reflect critically on the design of their own work and learning environments.
