Course overview

The goal of this course is improving the oral and written skills of the English language of the students by means of literature research on a biomedical topic regarding the ongoing research project(s) in the department of biomedical science.

A specific training in speaking and writing scientific English is a true benefit for students who will be employed in biomedical laboratories and pharmaceutical industries. In this course they will be prepared to understand and to use the English language, which is the international scientific language. This course will enable the students to work in an international environment. This course is also an interesting preparation for the following internship and for the writing of the bachelor thesis.

Course content

The course unit comprises the following parts:

  • Learning an academic English vocabulary and dealing with common mistakes made by not native speaking people in English scientific literature
  • Dealing with scientific literature concerning the ongoing research project(s)
  • Writing an abstract
  • Giving an English presentation about the ongoing research project(s)
  • Following an English scientific lesson or seminar and making a report

Learning outcomes

Bachelor students will be able to report clearly and accurately on experimental data and analysis results, projects, and the processing of scientific literature, using appropriate biomedical terminology.

The bachelor independently plans their laboratory work and organizes their analyses and experiments systematically and efficiently within an agreed timeframe.

Assessment

Online attendance is compulsary, written reports, online oral discussions, online oral presentations, assignments based on analysis of a scientific article, assessment of selected article, processing of scientific literature, video material of field trip.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the English language, understanding and knowledge of biochemistry at bachelor’s level, ability to organise own field trip.
